Caliente Recording Artist Nominated For Self Titled Album
New York, NY, December 8, 2003— Havana Caliente recording
artist Barbarito Torres has been nominated for a Grammy
award in the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin
Album. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences
has selected his self-titled album, Barbarito Torres, released
September 9, 2003, on Havana Caliente, a division of Caliente
Entertainment, distributed by Pimienta/Universal Latino,
for Grammy consideration. Winners will be announced at the
46th annual Grammy Awards scheduled for February 8th in
Los Angeles, California.
Barbarito
Torres is recognized as the world’s leading lute player.
He has been on tour in the United States since October in
support of his latest solo recording, Barbarito Torres.
Mr. Torres was hand picked by Ry Cooder for his participation
in the Buena Vista Social Club’s highly regarded album,
Buena Vista Social Club, which single-handedly changed the
history of Cuban music.
In being
announced as a Grammy nominee, Mr. Torres, who was on tour
in Seattle, Washington, said: “I am overjoyed that the Recording
Academy has recognized my latest album and nominated me
for a Grammy amongst such great artists. I appreciate the
support and I am delighted about this prestigious recognition
of my work.”
Mr.
Torres recorded his first solo album, Havana Café in 1999.
It became one of the most successful and critically acclaimed
Cuban releases of the last decade. His style of music reflects
the musical folklore of his native Cuba, the genre known
as musica guajira or the blues of the Cuban countryside.
His latest musical offering, Barbarito Torres, includes
songs from all genres of Cuban music, striking a balance
between joyful traditionalism and adventurous innovation.
